Web Addresses are how you can block websites or other domains that might not neatly fit into a content category, or in cases where you're using the Default-Deny Approach and need to make an exception for a specific website.
Allow, Block, SafeSearch, and YTRestricted rules all have a section for Web Addresses:
You can configure three main types of Web Addresses:
- Broad website domains.
- Hostnames or Exact
- Keywords
When you select Add addresses, you will see a box like this:
For most people, Auto-Detect is a one-stop shop that automatically detects if you're trying to block a website or an entire domain.
Configure Broad Domain Selections
Broad domains are best used when you want to configure your rule to apply to an entire website and all of its subdomains. As an example, if you wanted to block the entire Google suite of products, you could block the broad domain "google.com", and this would also block "mail.google.com", "images.google.com", and so on.
Here's how to do this:
- When adding an address, select Address
- Ensure that Broad is selected
- Enter "google.com" and select Add
You should see a card like this:
- Select Add Selections
This should block "google.com", "www.google.com", "images.google.com", etc.
Configure Hostnames or Exact Domain Selections
In our example, say blocking "google.com" is too restrictive (for example, maybe you want to use Gmail at "mail.google.com").
You could select an Exact domain (aka a Hostname) on your rule instead. Here's how we could allow "mail.google.com" on an Allow rule for our example:
- When adding an address, select Address
- Ensure Exact is selected
- Add the hostname "mail.google.com" and select Add
You should see a card like this:
In our example, this will only apply to "mail.google.com".
Configure Keywords for Domain Selections
Domain Keywords are a powerful way for you to block domains with a keyword. This is useful if you'd like to preemptively block websites that might not fit into a category you've blocked, but should still be blocked anyway.
For example, you might want to block any domains that contain the keyword "chat" (such as, "wechat.com"). Here's how you would do this:
- When adding an address, select Keyword
- Enter your keyword
You should see a card like this
- Select Add Selections
This will now block domain with the keyword "chat".
Note that this only blocks the domain for a website, and cannot block a specific webpage on an already allowed website. In our example, blocking the "chat" keyword on your Content Policy can't block a SubReddit like "reddit.com/r/wechat".
