Use the device config generator to block apps on a Supervised iPhone or iPad. You can specify an app policy to restrict certain apps from being downloaded or opened on the device.
You can choose between a blocklist and an allowlist approach. Both options are supported with the Device Config Generator.
The Device Config generator tool can be accessed from the dashboard by going to Device Configs > iOS. App blocklist and allowlist settings are under the Apps tab.
Prerequisites:
- Supervised mode must be enabled on your iPhone. See How to enable device supervision.
Here's how to enable Supervised App Blocking:
- Choose an App Blocking Mode: Pick between setting an Allowlist or Blocklist.
- Select Apps: Customize your apps.
- Sync changes to your device: After updating your App List, the updated Config File needs to be installed on your iPhone to apply changes.
Step 1: Choose an App Blocking Mode
App Blocklists are used to specify apps you want blocked on your iPhone. Even if those apps are installed on your iPhone, you won't have the ability to open them.
App Allowlists block every app other than the ones you've specified. If you need a highly restrictive setup (such as a dumb phone), you can instead choose a limited number of apps that are allowed on your iPhone.
Step 2: Select Apps
Apps can be searched for and selected using the Config Generator.
The default Apple apps not available from the App Store can be added directly from the Select Apps Widget:
Step 3: Sync the Config File to your Device
App Blocklists or Allowlists will be included with your iOS Config File. If you make changes to a blocklist or allowlist, then your Config File needs to be synced to your iPhone or iPad. Learn more about how Config Files work in our dedicated help doc for getting started with the Device Config Generator.
