Help for the most common problems while setting up your home router for Content Filtering.
How to tell router is properly connected to DNS Content Policy
First:
Make sure that you're performing the tests on a device connected to your Router.
If your devices are connected:
If you don't see any traffic, make sure that the virtual Router configured on Tech Lockdown has the same IP address as one listed on whatsmyip. Routers added to Tech Lockdown can be found on the dashboard under Settings > Routers. Ensure your IP address is correctly updated.
I get an "invalid IP address range" or "restricted subnet" error
This usually happens when you're connected to a VPN. This includes the filtered VPN used to enforce your Content Policy.
We recommend disabling the filtered VPN temporarily while connecting your router by following these steps:
- Go to the Settings > App Preferences on the Tech Lockdown dashboard.
- Set Filtering Mode to "DoH (DNS Only)".
You can optionally enable Allow Switching Modes. This will allow you to choose between DNS only mode and Warp mode from the Cloudflare Warp application or Cloudflare One app. When adding a router to the dashboard, make sure you're switched to "Gateway with DoH"; this is the same as DNS only mode.
Why can't I delete a Router I've added to the Dashboard?
Cloudflare has a limitation that prevents routers from being deleted. Since Tech Lockdown integrates to Cloudflare, we have the same limitations.
Having a router added to Tech Lockdown won't affect your Content Policy, and it's necessary if you've connected a device using DNS settings:
- If you've connected your iPhone using a DNS Config, the DNS settings being used point to the Router on Tech Lockdown.
- If you've connected your Android smartphone using Private DNS, the DNS settings being used point to the Router on Tech Lockdown.
If you're trying to disconnect your router, you'll need to log into your router's admin panel and reset DNS settings back to their defaults.
