Some of the most common questions related to VPNs and Proxies.
Other VPNs disconnecting or not working
On most devices, it's not possible to have more than one VPN enabled at once. You will need to disable other VPNs in order for filtering to work as expected.
In some cases, you can switch Cloudflare's Filtering Mode to DNS only in combination with another VPN, but this may not be supported by all VPN vendors. See this article for more information.
Blocking Other VPNs
If you want to block other VPNs, make sure that these categories are blocked by your Content Policy:
- "CIPA Filter": Used by schools and universities to block most VPN and Proxies, including websites used to download these applications.
- "Anonymizer": Directly blocks most known VPNs and Proxies, especially app versions for smartphones.
If you have a supervised iPhone, we also recommend installing the "Restrict New VPNs" Config Preset to block attempts to manually add or allow an app to add new VPN profiles.
If you have a managed Android device, check for the option to lock the current VPN to Cloudflare One. This should prevent switching to other VPNs that could be installed later. Optionally, you could decide to automatically block new apps that are downloaded or disable apps from being installed from the Play Store entirely.
Locking the Filtered VPN On and Preventing Switching other VPNs
If you want to ensure that your device can only use Cloudflare's VPN, it is possible to enforce this on most devices.
See this article for our full recommendations about how to do this.
