If you've double-clicked the Supervision Tool download on a Mac computer and see a pop-up with the message Apple could not verify "file" is free of malware that may harm your Mac or compromise your privacy...
-OR-
You see a Terminal window open each time you double-click the file in your Downloads folder...
...follow these steps to resolve the issue:
- First, check the ending of the file you're trying to select; it should either end in .tar or .app. If the file does not have a file extension and your Mac thinks it's an executable, see the instructions towards the end of this help doc.
If the file ends with .tar, then ensure you're unpacking the file properly first:
- Right-click the config file and choose Open With
- Select Archive Utility from the list of options:
If the file ends with .app, then continue with these steps:
- Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security
- Scroll down to the Security section.
-
You should see a message like:
“Tech_Lockdown_supervise_… was blocked from use because it is not from an identified developer.”
- Click “Open Anyway”, then confirm in the dialog.
File is Downloaded without a File Extension
If the file looks like this after downloading to Finder:
You've likely downloaded the file using Safari, and by default, Safari will attempt to uncompress the file automatically. This should be disabled.
- Open Safari, and select the "Safari" icon near the top corner of your screen, and go to Settings (see picture below).
- Go to the General tab and disable Open "safe" files after downloading.
- Download the tool from the Tech Lockdown dashboard again. It should now be displayed as a proper GZIP (.gz) file, and can be decompressed using the Archive Utility.
