When you set up Remote Supervision on an iPhone or iPad running iOS 27, some settings may be reset. Please review this document thoroughly before upgrading to Remote Supervision.
Who this affects
- Affected: setting up, upgrading to, or reconnecting Remote Supervision on a device running iOS 27.
- Not affected: devices on iOS 26 or earlier, Supervised Mode without remote management (manual supervision), and turning Supervised Mode off.
What may be reset
- You'll be signed out of your Apple account and will need to sign in again. Make sure you know your Apple account email/password before starting the upgrade process.
- Notifications and app permissions. If you've granted permissions to an app, such as the ability to send notifications or access health data, these permissions will need to be granted again. You'll need to re-open common apps that you use again and authorize the permissions again.
- Certain general Settings. Some settings go back to their defaults, such as your Control Center layout.
- Data stored only on the device. Safari bookmarks, calendars, shortcuts, Wallet passes, message history, and photos and videos that aren't synced with iCloud may be removed. This is why we recommend double-checking that iCloud is set to sync all important items before restoring, since signing back into your Apple account gets you access to everything again.
What stays
Fortunately, the majority of data/settings are not lost during the upgrade:
- Apps and their data. You won't need to sign back into your apps and app data is not lost. Only app permissions are reset.
- Contacts, notes, reminders, health data, saved passwords, and your wallpaper, as well as anything that is set to sync with iCloud.
- Screen Time settings. These are tied to your Apple account and are recovered when you sign back in.
Before you start
We recommend backing up your device before upgrading to Remote Supervision, just in case you decide to revert.
- Back up to iCloud. On the iPhone/iPad, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup, verify you have a backup from within the last day, otherwise, tap Back Up Now, and wait for it to finish.
- Verify important items are enabled in "Saved to iCloud". Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Saved to iCloud > See All. Turn on Photos, Messages, Safari, Calendars and Wallet. Give photos time to finish uploading.
- Save anything that isn't in iCloud. For example, import photos and videos to a computer.
- Have your Apple Account password ready. You'll need it during setup.
After setup
- Sign in with your Apple Account when you are prompted on the setup screen. If you skip it, sign in later at the top of the Settings app.
- Open each app that you use regularly (like Messages) and re-grant permissions/notifications if prompted.
- Check your Settings, including Focus and Control Center.
- Give iCloud some time to bring back your photos, messages, bookmarks and calendars.
